Two of western Georgia's most significant historic sites
Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral are the two must-see historic landmarks within easy reach of Kutaisi Airport, both connected to King David the Builder, who founded Gelati in 1106.
Gelati Monastery — a UNESCO World Heritage Site
About 10 km (roughly 20 minutes by car) from Kutaisi, Gelati was once a major centre of Orthodox learning as well as worship, and its main cathedral holds some of the finest surviving medieval Georgian mosaics and frescoes. It's listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Bagrati Cathedral — right in the city
An 11th-century cathedral on a hill overlooking central Kutaisi and the Rioni River, Bagrati is easy to combine with Gelati in a single trip since it's inside the city itself rather than out in the countryside. Note that Bagrati itself is not currently within UNESCO's World Heritage boundaries — following a controversial 21st-century reconstruction, the listing was redrawn to cover only Gelati Monastery.
Making it work with your flight
Both sites together typically take half a day with transport; a taxi or private transfer is the simplest way to see both without renting a car, especially useful if you have a long layover or an early flight the next morning.
