Kutaisi's real advantage: what's around it
The airport itself is modest, but its location puts you within an hour or two of some of western Georgia's best-known sights — making a long layover or an extra day before your flight genuinely worth planning around.
Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral
The closest and easiest pairing: Gelati, a UNESCO-listed 12th-century monastery about 20 minutes from the airport, and Bagrati Cathedral, an 11th-century landmark right in central Kutaisi. Both together take roughly half a day.
Prometheus Cave
About 23 km from Kutaisi, this cave system combines dramatic stalactite formations with a short underground boat ride — a distinctive, family-friendly option that also takes around half a day.
Okatse and Martvili canyons
A bit further out at roughly 50 km each, these two canyons in the Samegrelo region are often visited together on a single tour, combining hanging-bridge walks with boat rides through narrow limestone gorges — plan for closer to a full day, and note there's no public transport, so a rental car, transfer, or organized tour is necessary.
