Smoking at Kutaisi Airport: What the Law Allows, and What the Airport Publishes

Is there a smoking area at Kutaisi Airport?

The airport does not publish one. Smoking appears nowhere on Kutaisi's own site — not in the FAQ, not on the security-check page, not in the list of passenger services. Third-party smoking directories do make claims about this airport and they contradict each other: one says smoking is permitted only outside the terminal, another states there is an area inside the terminal at its very centre. Neither carries a date or a source, so we are not going to repeat either as fact.

What does Georgian law actually allow?

Georgia's tobacco control law made enclosed public places and workplaces smoke free on 1 May 2018, and it is strict by European standards — the ban covers e-cigarettes and hookah alongside cigarettes. Airports are not blanket-exempt from it. The one relevant carve-out permits a designated smoking room in an airport's transit zone. Read that precisely: it means such a room may lawfully exist there, not that one exists at Kutaisi.

What that means at a single-terminal airport

Kutaisi has one terminal and one concourse, and almost all of its traffic is point-to-point on Wizz Air rather than connecting — so it barely has a transit zone in the sense the exception was written for. The assumption to travel on is that there is nowhere to smoke once you are through the security check, and that anything you want to smoke should happen outside the building beforehand.

Can you step back out for a cigarette after security?

Assume not. The airport is explicit about the equivalent rule on the arrivals side — once you leave the baggage reclaim area you are not permitted back in — and a small single-hall airside is not built for re-entry either. If you are already through, treat that as final rather than something to negotiate at the checkpoint.

On board, and duty-free tobacco

Smoking on commercial aircraft is banned outright under the same Georgian law, and every carrier serving Kutaisi enforces it independently. Buying tobacco in duty-free changes nothing about where you may smoke. It does raise a customs question at the other end, and the declaration threshold on the way out of Kutaisi is 400 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco.

The practical plan

Smoke outside the terminal entrance before you check in, keep the airport's recommended two hours in mind, and treat the security check as the point of no return. If you need nicotine airside, pouches or gum are the answer: the smoking ban does not reach them, and they are not liquids, so the 100 ml hand-luggage rule does not touch them either.
